Athens, Ga.-based American Pest Control is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021. To mark the occasion, it launched a year-long campaign, Operation  50-50, on its 49th “birthday” on Nov. 15, 2020. As a result, the team has already completed “50 hours in 50 days,” a community service project.

On its Operation 50-50 website, American notes that that project, which ended Jan. 5, was a rousing success: “From serving meals at church, to helping repair storm damage, volunteering at the VFW, to bringing holiday joy to those in need, our team worked with a servant’s heart to spread cheer in communities across Northeast Georgia this holiday season and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Starting Jan. 6, however, “50 Miles in 50 Days” will get underway — encouraging employees and the public to commit to walk or run a total of 50 miles in as many days. The end date is Feb. 25, 2021. According to a news release, 100 percent of the $20 registration fee will be donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. American Pest Control will provide participants with an event T-shirt and exclusive digital swag.

Registration for the 50 Miles in 50 Days campaign is open from Jan. 6 through Jan. 31 (the 25th day). For more information or to register to participate, visit Operation50-50.com/get-involved.

ABOUT AMERICAN PEST CONTROL

American Pest Control was founded in 1971 by the late Gene Higginbotham, a native of Oconee County in northeast Georgia. Higginbotham worked for a national chain pest control company for several years, traveling with his family to work in cities across the United States. When he decided to branch out on his own, he and his family returned to Athens, Ga., to establish American Pest Control.

Higginbotham’s children, Laurie and Scott Higginbotham, continue to run the company. There are now 137 employees throughout eight offices in Winder, Social Circle, Conyers, Greensboro, Washington, Hartwell, Toccoa and Clayton, Ga., in addition to the headquarters office in Athens.
